Chennai, August 15, 2025: The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Chennai Zonal Unit, partnered with the Department of Social Work at Stella Maris College to host a drug awareness program at Besant Nagar Beach on Independence Day. The initiative was part of a nationwide drug awareness campaign directed by the Union Home Minister to increase public knowledge about the dangers of drugs and gain community support for drug control.
Students from the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) program performed two street plays, two dance shows, and a puppetry show, all highlighting the harmful effects of drug abuse and illegal drug trafficking. The performances attracted a large crowd and effectively communicated powerful anti-drug messages.
Shri T. G. Venkatesh, the Deputy Director General of the Southern Region, attended as the chief guest and delivered a speech about how drugs are destroying individuals, families, society, and the country. He encouraged communities, parents, and teachers to work together to protect young people from drugs.

To further raise awareness, literature was distributed to the public on the negative effects of drug abuse and the penalties for illicit drug trafficking. The pamphlets also provided guidance for parents, teachers, and students on how to identify signs of drug abuse and take prompt action. The MANAS helpline number (1933) and the Ministry of Social Justice helpline number were announced repeatedly to ensure the public was aware of these support systems for mental health and de-addiction.
The event ended with a “Drug-Free Pledge,” where attendees committed to rejecting drugs and building a Drug-Free India. The campaign, which was conducted in the spirit of #NasheSeAzaadi, highlighted that living a healthy, drug-free life is essential for true freedom.
Following this event, NCB Chennai also held awareness programs at Chennai International Airport and the Keelambakkam Bus Stand and organized a walkathon at Besant Nagar Beach on the morning of August 16, 2025.
