Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh: In a decisive move to maintain public order and dignity in the digital space, Visakhapatnam Range DIG Shri Gopinath Jatti, I.P.S., conducted a review meeting with Superintendents of Police from Alluri Sitaramaraju, Anakapalli, Vizianagaram, Parvathipuram Manyam, and Srikakulam districts, along with Deputy Superintendents of Police from across the range.
During the meeting, the DIG laid out a clear and comprehensive strategy to deal firmly with offensive, indecent, and defamatory posts on social media.
Key directions from the DIG include:
Strict Action Against Misuse of Social Media: Every objectionable post, particularly those targeting women or spreading false propaganda, will be closely scrutinized. Offenders will face stern legal action and punishment.
Nodal Officers and Special Teams: Each district will appoint a nodal officer, supported by dedicated teams, to monitor objectionable content. These teams will submit daily reports on identified offenders and actions taken.
Treating Repeat Offenders as Organized Crime: Individuals or groups habitually posting offensive content will face cases under organized crime provisions, extending liability even to those who support or aid them.
Comprehensive Offender Database: All districts must maintain updated databases of those posting offensive or indecent material online.
Strong Progress Already Made: Within the Visakhapatnam range, 134 cases have been registered against social media offenders so far. Of these, 106 arrests have been made across 57 cases, charge sheets filed in 25 cases, and investigations are ongoing in another 25.
Expedited Investigations: DSPs have been instructed to personally supervise social media cases registered in their jurisdiction and ensure fast-tracked investigation. SPs have been tasked with monitoring progress closely.
Issuing a stern warning, DIG Shri Gopinath Jatti said that those misusing social media to spread offensive, indecent, or anti-social content cannot escape the law under any circumstances.
The police leadership emphasized that protecting the dignity of individuals and maintaining social harmony, both online and offline, remain a top priority for the Andhra Pradesh Police.
