Belagavi, Karnataka: The Belagavi police have initiated a cybercrime investigation following a false social media post that alleged an attack on the residence of Colonel Sofiya Qureshi’s in-laws in Gokak taluk. The misleading post, which surfaced on the platform ‘X’ and was later deleted, is suspected to have originated from outside India. Authorities are actively working to identify the individual responsible for the misinformation.
Superintendent of Police Bheemashankar Guled confirmed that no such incident occurred, labeling the post as false. He stated, “We have filed a petition at the Cyber Crime police station in Belagavi district to seek details of this account holder from ‘X’.”
As a precautionary measure, local police visited the residence of Colonel Qureshi’s in-laws and have stationed two officers outside their home to ensure their safety.
Colonel Sofiya Qureshi was a prominent figure during media briefings on Operation Sindoor, alongside Wing Commander Vyomika Singh. The spread of such false information has raised concerns about the misuse of social media platforms to disseminate fake news, prompting calls for stricter monitoring and verification processes.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are urging the public to refrain from sharing unverified information that could cause unnecessary panic and distress.
