Madurai, Tamil Nadu, June 5: An unsettling incident has come to light at the Palanganatham Anganwadi Centre under the Madurai Corporation, where a cockroach was allegedly found in the kolukkattai (steamed rice dumpling) provided as part of a nutritious food supplement to children.
The incident came to notice when a young girl, while taking the food home, informed her mother that something unusual was inside the steamed rice dumpling. On inspecting the item, her mother was shocked to find a cockroach inside. She rushed to a nearby government hospital but reportedly could not find a doctor immediately to examine the child.
Fortunately, it was later confirmed that the child had not consumed the contaminated food. Meanwhile, the Anganwadi worker reportedly left the premises in haste following the incident.
The presence of an insect in the food meant for children has caused widespread concern among local residents and parents, raising questions about hygiene and quality control in food distribution at government-run centres.
Authorities are expected to take appropriate action and review safety protocols to prevent such incidents in the future.
