Kerala: Cyber criminals are adopting new tactics to defraud innocent citizens by sending malicious .apk (Android application) files under the pretext of official communications—often in the name of the Motor Vehicles Department or similar government bodies.
Important Warning:
These fraudulent files may appear to come from your friends or known contacts, having already fallen victim. Once installed, these fake apps gain control over your phone, including access to your banking apps, contacts, and social media accounts.
What Can Happen:
- Your bank accounts may be drained via unauthorized transactions.
- The app may automatically send the scam file to your friends and contacts using your social media accounts.
- Your personal data and identity could be compromised.
Police Advisory – Stay Safe by Following These Tips:
- Never download or install .apk files sent via social media or messaging platforms, even if from known contacts.
- Do not trust any app claiming to be from a government department unless downloaded from the official app store (Google Play Store or Apple App Store).
- Regularly update your phone and security software.
- Immediately uninstall suspicious apps and scan your device for malware.
