Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Police on Monday launched two women squads to ensure the safety and security of women in Srinagar city.
The teams will patrol around coaching centers, schools, colleges, and other vulnerable areas in Srinagar, a police spokesman said.
He said they would also contact the managers of educational institutions and coaching centers for immediate action in case of any urgent need.
Mr. Sujit Kumar, Deputy Inspector General, Central Kashmir Range, who formed the squads, appreciated the initiative of the Srinagar Police and said that women can be fully protected by these women security teams.
Each squad will consist of five women police officers, a spokesman said. He said women Police Inspector Ms. Khaleda Parveen had been appointed in charge of the two squads.
He said the squads would work in close coordination with PCR vans, jurisdictional police stations, and the women’s police station, Rambagh.
Srinagar police have launched the 9596770601 Women’s Helpline specifically for women’s safety issues, which is already operational 24 hours a day, a spokesperson said.
He said Srinagar police were assuring all citizens that crimes against women would not be tolerated at all and that both preventive and corrective measures would be strictly enforced in this regard.
A 24-year-old woman was recently injured by acid thrown at her in Srinagar. Three people were arrested in the case.
