Kolkata: Acting upon reliable source information, officers of the Detective Department’s Watch Section maintained a secret vigil around Chadni Chawk area under Bowbazar Police Station on 2.6.2022. During the vigil, a person was detained in front of Modern Eating house carrying a backpack, and identified himself as Samiul Sekh (29) of Malda district.
On searching the backpack which the person was carrying, in presence of witnesses, our team found a total of 42 used Android mobile phones from the detained person, of different makes and models. On being asked, Samiul could not provide satisfactory answer about the phones in his possession, nor produce valid documents for them. Samiul was then arrested on the spot, the mobile phones were seized, and a case was recorded at Bowbazar Police Station. Closer interrogation revealed that the accused person is a member of an organized racket involving stolen mobile phones, and they traffic the stolen phones to Bangladesh with the help of their associates in Kolkata and other parts of the state.
The seized mobile phones are being verified to locate their owners. The accused is in police custody.
