Kottayam, Kerala: In a significant judgment ensuring justice for sexual assault survivors, the Hon’ble Erattupetta Fast Track Special Court (POCSO), presided over by Smt. Roshan Thomas, sentenced Saji T.G. (60), son of Gopalan, resident of South Paranthanam House, Vallichira village, Valavoor Karayil Nelliyanikad area, Meenachil taluk, to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹1,00,000 for sexually assaulting a mentally challenged woman.
The court further ordered that ₹75,000 from the fine amount be paid as compensation to the survivor. The offence occurred between 24th and 26th August 2021, and the sentence was awarded under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the POCSO Act.
The case was registered at the Pala Police Station, and the accused was arrested following a meticulous investigation led by Sub-Inspector Abhilash M.D. under the supervision of Station House Officer K.P. Thompson. The charge sheet was promptly filed after completing the investigation.
During the trial, the prosecution presented 19 witnesses and 23 documents. Special Public Prosecutor Adv. Jose Mathew Thayyil effectively argued the case on behalf of the State, leading to the conviction.
The verdict highlights the dedicated efforts of Pala Police and the commitment of the judiciary towards ensuring justice and protecting vulnerable sections of society.
