Hyderabad City, Telangana: Hyderabad City Police Commissioner Sri V.C. Sajjanar, IPS, has issued a strong warning that strict legal action will be taken against anyone involved in harassment, extortion, or disturbance of public peace, irrespective of identity. At the same time, he appealed to members of the transgender community to abandon illegal activities, make use of government welfare schemes, and live with dignity and mutual respect in society.
The Hyderabad City Police organized a special interactive meeting with nearly 250 transgender persons at the Centre for Economic and Social Studies (CESS) Auditorium, Ameerpet, to address concerns, listen to grievances, and promote lawful and respectful coexistence. The meeting was chaired by Commissioner Sajjanar and attended by Additional DGP (CID & Women Safety Wing) Ms. Charu Sinha, IPS, along with senior police officers.
Public Safety and Law & Order Emphasis
Addressing the gathering, the Commissioner expressed concern over recent complaints from the public, including incidents of forced collections, group clashes, and internal disputes within transgender groups that have resulted in law-and-order problems and, in some cases, loss of life.
He clearly stated that harassing the public, forcibly entering houses, or demanding money in the name of auspicious occasions will not be tolerated. “No one is above the law. Anyone who takes the law into their own hands will face strict action. Registered criminal cases can seriously affect your future,” the Commissioner cautioned, urging participants to stay away from unlawful practices.
Government Support and Welfare Assurance
Commissioner Sajjanar reiterated that the government is committed to the welfare of transgender persons and is in the process of introducing a comprehensive policy focused on their social and economic upliftment. He assured that the police department stands firmly with transgender individuals who choose lawful means and dignified living.
‘Pride Place’ Initiative for Support
Speaking on the occasion, Additional DGP Charu Sinha, IPS, highlighted the establishment of ‘Pride Place’, a dedicated support mechanism under the Women Safety Wing to address issues faced by transgender persons.
She encouraged them to approach the wing without fear or hesitation in cases of harassment, discrimination, or personal distress. “Our doors are open. We are here to listen and resolve your problems,” she said, while advising participants to avoid illegal activities and work towards respectful integration into society.
Employment and Identity Documentation
Mr. Rajender, Additional Director, Hyderabad District Transgender Welfare Department, informed that around 50,000 transgender persons reside in Telangana. He stressed the importance of obtaining Central Government-issued Transgender Identity Cards to access welfare schemes, reservations, and benefits.
He also revealed that special initiatives are underway to provide employment opportunities, including placements in the corporate sector, to support financial independence and social empowerment.
