The accused have been identified as Dr. Somesh Solomon, Vijayalakshmi alias Vijaya, and Navneet Narayan. Following interrogation, the accused confessed to their involvement and have since been remanded to judicial custody.
The case came to light when a couple, Prabhavathi and her husband Ramesh Mulya of Kallugudde, Herur village in Kaup, attempted to register a four-day-old baby at an Anganwadi under the Poshan Tracker scheme. The Anganwadi worker grew suspicious that the baby did not belong to the couple. Upon questioning, it was revealed that the baby was allegedly procured through a deal involving doctors at a private hospital in Mangaluru.
Investigations uncovered that Prabhavathi and Ramesh claimed the baby, born on August 3, was handed over to them by doctors at Colaco Hospital in Mangaluru. They further admitted that Prabhavathi’s relative, Priyanka, had informed them about the delivery and facilitated the transaction, paying ₹4.5 lakh through the hospital to obtain the baby.
