Amritpal Singh, the chief of the Waris Punjab De (WPD) outfit, a pro-Khalistan propagator, was apprehended by the Punjab police in Moga on Sunday. Singh had been a fugitive since March 18, after his supporters stormed a police station in Ajnala, demanding the release of his aide, Lovepreet Toofan. The police initiated a crackdown on him and his associates, leading to a month-long chase that ultimately ended in his arrest.

Singh is facing charges under the National Security Act (NSA), which is a law intended to provide preventive detention in cases involving national security. He is accused of attempting to divide Punjab on communal lines, sourcing weapons from Pakistan through its intelligence agency, Inter-Services Intelligence, and indulging in anti-national activities. It was suggested that he was trying to revive the Khalistani movement in Punjab.

After his surrender, Singh was taken into custody and is likely to be taken to Dibrugarh central jail in Assam, where eight of his associates are already imprisoned. Punjab IGP Sukhchain Singh confirmed that Singh was arrested around 6.45 am in Rode village, Moga. In a tweet, the Punjab police urged citizens to maintain peace and harmony and refrain from sharing any fake news.

The arrest of Amritpal Singh is a significant achievement for the Punjab police, who worked tirelessly to apprehend him. The authorities have sent out a strong message that anti-national activities will not be tolerated, and the law will take its course. The people of Punjab can rest assured that the police are committed to maintaining peace and order in the state.
