Wayanad, Kerala, October 21: The Wayanad District Police observed Police Commemoration Day with deep respect and gratitude, honouring the brave police personnel who laid down their lives in the line of duty. The commemoration parade was held on Monday morning at the District Headquarters Camp, under the leadership of District Police Chief Taposh Basumatari, IPS.
The District Police Chief laid a wreath at the Police Memorial Hall, paying homage to the martyrs. As part of the ceremony, the names of 191 police personnel who sacrificed their lives between September 1, 2024, and August 31, 2025, were read out, followed by a moment of silence in their memory.
Recalling the origins of the observance, officials noted that Police Commemoration Day is observed nationwide every year on October 21, in remembrance of the ten valiant policemen who were martyred in 1959 at Hot Springs, Ladakh, while defending the nation during the India-China conflict.
Additional SP N.R. Jayaraj, DySPs K.J. Johnson (DCRB), M.M. Abdul Karim (Special Branch), V.K. Vishwambharan (Mananthavady Sub-Division), K.K. Abdul Sherif (Bathery Sub-Division), P.L. Shyju (Kalpetta Sub-Division), along with Inspectors and officers from various police stations and units, took part in the solemn ceremony. Sub-Inspector Jose George commanded the parade.
The event reflected the police department’s enduring commitment to honouring the courage and selfless service of those who made the ultimate sacrifice in protecting peace and public safety.
