Udupi, Karnataka: In a shocking incident, a woman has been arrested for allegedly strangling her daughter to death following a family dispute in Karkala, Udupi district.
According to the complaint filed by Sheikh Mustafa (51), a resident of Sajan Manzil, Kanangi Road, Hirgana Village, Karkala, his elder brother’s daughter, Apsabhanu Shifanaz, had been admitted to a city hospital in Karkala after reportedly collapsing at home. The medical officer who examined her declared her dead on arrival.
Initially, a case was registered under UDR No. 40/2025, Section 194(3)(IV) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) at Karkala Nagar Police Station, based on suspicion surrounding her death.
However, during the post-mortem examination conducted at Manipal KMC Hospital, doctors confirmed that Shifanaz had died due to strangulation. Further investigation revealed that the deceased had left home around 2:00 p.m. stating she was going to Udupi to meet her friend, Mohammed Salim. Reportedly angered by this, her mother, Gulzar Bhanu (45), confronted and allegedly strangled her daughter to death in a fit of rage.
Following the investigation, Karkala City Police registered a murder case under Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) in Crime No. 131/2025 against the accused. The police have arrested Gulzar Bhanu and produced her before the Honorable Court.
The investigation is ongoing under the supervision of senior police officials.
