Gurugram: In a proactive move towards ensuring road safety, Gurugram Traffic Police has initiated dialogue with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to enhance surveillance measures on the recently inaugurated Dwarka Expressway. Following the inauguration of the 19-kilometer stretch by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 11, Gurugram Traffic Police swiftly began enforcing traffic regulations the very next day.
Recognizing the importance of ensuring the safety of commuters, Gurugram Traffic Police officials have formally communicated with NHAI, emphasizing the necessity of installing automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras, speed traps, and additional traffic signals along the elevated section and lanes below it. This collaborative effort aims to curb traffic violations and enhance overall road safety standards.
In the initial enforcement phase, Gurugram Traffic Police issued 410 challans within a span of eight days, targeting both light and heavy motor vehicle drivers. Notably, the enforcement team, comprising 25 dedicated traffic personnel and an interceptor vehicle, is operating round-the-clock to uphold traffic regulations on the expressway. Led by an inspector-rank official overseeing five zonal officers deployed at strategic locations along the stretch, this team is committed to maintaining order and ensuring compliance with speed limits.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Mr. `Virender Vij highlighted the significance of addressing wrong side driving, which accounted for a majority of the challans issued during the enforcement period. Additionally, efforts are underway to address speeding violations, with 32 challans issued to violators in this regard.
Gurugram Traffic Police’s proactive approach includes engaging with NHAI to implement advanced monitoring systems, including speed traps and ANPR cameras, across key junctions on the expressway. Plans to install traffic signals at seven junctions below the elevated sections underscore the commitment to comprehensive safety measures.
NHAI officials have affirmed their commitment to road safety, indicating progress in setting up a robust traffic monitoring system. With a tender already allotted for the installation of cameras, work is underway to enhance surveillance capabilities and ensure safer journeys for commuters.
The collaborative efforts between Gurugram Traffic Police and NHAI reflect a shared commitment to prioritizing road safety, ultimately contributing to a safer and smoother travel experience for all commuters on the Dwarka Expressway.
